FOR PARENTS & EDUCATORS OF BOYS OF ALL AGES
Our kids are growing up in a world that is working hard to define them, often before those of us who live, love and work with them get a chance to.
The digital world is targeting our kids and adolescents with a relentless stream of messages about who they should be, how they should act, and what it means to be a man or woman. While those messages affect all young people, too often it’s our boys who dominate the troubling statistics. They are labelled ‘problematic’, and delivered a crude, narrow view of masculinity to live up to.
In this masterclass, two of Australia’s most passionate ‘boy champions’ come together for an honest, practical, inter-generational conversation about raising boys who are kind, confident and connected.
Maggie Dent – Australia’s favourite parenting author, former teacher and counsellor, and mum of four adult sons – is joined by youth advocate and educator Daniel Principe, who has worked with 50,000 boys in schools and universities across Australia.
In this lunchtime session, Maggie and Daniel will explore:
👉 What boys in school are telling Daniel, and what the adults who guide them most need to hear
👉 How adolescence – which has always been a confusing and stressful stage for we humans – is different for teen boys today
👉 When and how to talk to boys about consent, respect and relationships, especially in a world where pornography is shaping many young people’s understanding of sex often before they even have their first kiss
👉 The 'man box' — the rigid stereotypes around what it means to be a 'real man' — and how that's shifting
👉 What messages your boys are actually receiving about being a man, and how that is shaping their friendships, relationships and self-talk
👉 What works best in raising decent, kind, empathetic men when there is still a lot of negativity about vulnerability and mental health challenges
👉 The keys to effective, respectful communication that works for boys
👉 How to deal with disrespectful behaviour or derogatory comments at home or school
👉 The challenges facing this generation of boys, and how we can build hope and optimism for the men they're becoming
Join us and become part of shifting what's possible for our boys.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you only focusing on boys in this class?
I am very aware that girls are also struggling in today’s digital world, and that we still have a long way to go in terms of gender equality in many areas. These boys’ masterclasses are offered at a time when there is significant concern and confusion about adolescent boys, and I know many parents and educators are seeking guidance and support.
I believe that conversations about healthy manhood also benefit girls and wider society. If you are looking for my girls’ masterclasses, please check out my other classes Raising Mighty Girls (with Steve Biddulph) and Understanding Our Gorgeous, Confused Girls (with Michelle Mitchell). – Maggie
